Safety is Marine Atlantic's number one priority. The vessel fleet is maintained to high standards and codes such as Transport Canada Marine Safety, Lloyds Register and Det Norske Veritas Classification Societies as well as the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, an internationally recognized quality assurance system. The Corporation's fleet undergoes a continuous preventative maintenance program.
The Corporation is committed to reinforcing a 'safety comes first'; culture with its employees. Everyday activities are performed using certified equipment and procedures. During the year, the Corporation implemented a new Occupational Safety and Health program (OSH). Two elements of this program are the personal protective equipment and job hazard analysis.
An element of ensuring a safety-oriented environment is being prepared to respond to unplanned incidents thereby making safety and environmental stewardship a priority. During 2005, the Corporation developed an Emergency Response Plan to provide structure and instruction to managers when dealing with emergencies.
A new Marine Evacuation System (MES) program was introduced with 300 employees receiving training by year-end. The MES program is an interactive learning experience that directs employees through an emergency situation, identifies crucial lines of communication and prepares employees to efficiently and effectively deploy the MES.
